Circolazione a targhe alterne was introduced by some town councils to combat the increase in traffic and pollution in town centres. It stipulates that on days with an evendate, only cars whose number plate ends in an even number or a zero may be on the road; on days with an odd date, only cars with odd registration numbers may be used. Public holidays are generally, but not always, exempt.
