The Presidente del Consiglio, the Italian Prime Minister, is the leader of the Government. He or she submits nominations for ministerial posts to the "Presidente della Repubblica", who then appoints them if approved. The Presidente del Consiglio is appointed by the "Presidente della Repubblica", in consultation with the leaders of the parliamentary parties, former heads of state, the "Presidente della Camera" and the "Presidente del Senato". The Presidente della Repubblica is the head of state. He or she must be an Italian citizen of at least 50 years of age, and is elected by Parliament and by three delegates from each of the Italian regions. He or she has the power to suspend the implementation of legislation and to dissolve one or both chambers of Parliament, and presides over the magistrates' governing body (the "Consiglio Superiore della Magistratura").
