provinciaA Provincia is the autonomous political and administrative unit which is on a level between a "Comune" and a "Regione"; there are 103 in the whole of Italy. The Provincia is responsible for public health and sanitation, for the maintenance of major roads and public buildings such as schools, and for agriculture and fisheries. Situated in the "capoluogo", or chief town, each Provincia is run by a "Giunta provinciale", which is elected by the "Consiglio Provinciale"; both of these bodies are presided over by a "Presidente".
