Italian children first go to school at the age of three. They remain at the "scuola materna" until they are six, when they move on to the "scuola primaria" for another five years. After this come three years of "scuola secondaria di primo grado". Students who wish to continue their schooling attend "scuola secondaria di secondo grado", choosing between several types of institution which specialize in different subject areas.
